Position: Design Engineer - Mechanical (PE)
Position Summary
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead the area of mechanical engineering within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers collaborating towards new product development of medium voltage power electronic converters for marine and wind power applications. The position will focus in the areas of packaging, smart manufacturing and thermal analysis.
Position Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Design packaging and assembly of power electronic converter components in NEMA enclosures
- Lead the team toward innovative approaches in smart designs, DFM, captive hardware and lean manufacturing.
- Lead family product quality control during prototyping and manufacturing.
- Test structural and vibration integrity of product.
- Design assemblies sensitive to thermal considerations of heat-sinks, cold-plates, heat-pipes and heat exchangers.
- Design bus work for high current and voltage application with special attention addressed towards insulation materials and creepage length.
- Provide guidance for PCB manufacturing.
- Mount power electronic components.
- Document processes for manufacturing.
- Write technical papers, patents, application notes for product definition and improvement.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

SCOPE, PURPOSE & FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
Frequent contacts with engineers, supervisors, and non-supervisory personnel to gather and explain information related to assigned areas of work. Occasional contacts with suppliers, Purchasing, Sales and Service department representatives, manufacturing supervisors, shop and laboratory personnel and engineers related to assigned projects.
CRITICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES To be qualified for this position, an individual must possess these critical skills and/or abilities and must be able to demonstrate the use of them.
- Solid experience with manufacturing processes as applied to packaging of power converters.
- Expertise in manufacturing and packaging of power devices such as IGBT, capacitors, heat sinks, diodes, switchgear, buswork and circuit boards.
- Familiar with fabrication processes for metals, polymers and composite fibers.
- Machining experience a plus.
- Knowledge of standards and certification for marine environment a plus.
- Experience with insulation materials for medium and high voltage levels.
- Experience with data acquisition software and hardware for the purpose of test and measurement.
- 3D CAD modeling software with packages such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, ProE, SolidWorks, Catia or similar.
- Experience with finite element analysis tools such as fluent, Icepack or similar.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Three to five years experience using AutoCAD, MS-Office and C/C++.
